Into Africa: A unit for the new KS3 PoS

Some resources will appear shortly once we get closer to teaching that particular unit. A new Guardian project for October 2007 is following a village in NE Uganda. It is called KATINE. The project website contains a wide range of interactive resources, but also features videos and other resources for teachers. Some good personal stories and plenty of information. One for higher level students to use for research.

The KATINE CHRONICLES BLOG is part of the suite of resources. One to follow for the next few years.

Aim is to tackle misconceptions of place and raise awareness of issues that continent faces, and limitations to development. Considers Citizenship issues, and also concepts of DIVERSITY and INEQUALITY.

We look at examples from the different areas of the continent. Remember to impress the diversity of Africa - or Mrs. Clarke will be annoyed...

1	Into Africa	Mapping - using Smart notebook file and mapping sheet. Resource produced.
2	The EAST Kenya - Kenya Living Flower Game	Based on Miss Muncaster and friends' travels in the country. Using photocards. Comparing the lives of 4 different people using photocards. Can also use similar activity from Waugh's "PLACES" book, with the relevant supporting worksheets. As mentioned at the Norfolk Geography conference Lake Naivasha Flower Farming Flower Game. This worked very well. Enjoyed the activity, and seeing the game changing. Follow-up activity is to suggest some adaptations to the game and explanation of the rules.
3	SOUTH AFRICA	Urban life in South Africa.
4	Blood Diamonds - Sierra Leone	Kanye West Work related to that of Noel Jenkins on DIGITAL GEOGRAPHY. Also some production of powerpoints on the theme of blood diamonds. Thanks to CLS for her additional movie contributions here.
5 & 6	The Gambia (WEST Africa) Lessons from the Gambia	Lesson taught in 'African style' to begin with. A nice resource with a powerpoint and some images. Also show the classic WALKING TO KIBERA movie to show the journey to school. Ditch the Coldplay though...
7 & 8	HIV / Aids - a continent-wide problem...	Thanks to Tom Biebrach for this resource link http://www.aidsinafrica.net/map.php Roll over the country for the statistics A challenging piece of work.
9	Water for Life	Could link with a fund raising activity - some ACTIVE citizenship work. Participatory geographies... Simple WATER USE survey - a range of these online.
10	ASSESSMENT	Could be adapted from a range of the other activities in the unit.
