Globalisation: A Unit for the new KS3 PoS

1	Footprinting What is an eco-footprint YouTube Video starters (see embedded videos below - can be saved using Zamzar for use in the classroom Starter activity The winners and losers of summer - look at how the weather affects our consumption patterns. Can be obtained from Slideshare. Why calculate ecological footprints? Are ecological footprints the same size around the world? Do wealth and development change the size of the footprint? 2	Footprinting: What are footprints ?	Dan Ellison's scheme of work from RGS-IBG BP Footprint Calculator (CD Rom) and website. Also use the MYABODO website: it's described as an 'interactive toy that lets you shape a house to suit you. See how it shapes the climate' http://myabodo.com You can then position your house in a neighbourhood and start seeing how you can change your footprint.
3	Reducing your personal footprint.	Pledge Wall There are several models that we could use for this particular piece of work. http://liveearthtree.spaces.live.com/ LIVE EARTH had a website with a tree which has a useful pledge leaf to download - this has the bonus of producing quite a visual display as a result of the work. or http://www.e-cards.com/mosaics/index.jsp?pubId=1578947499&t=GL add a tile with your pledge on it... What will be your step on the journey ? Use Miss Muncaster's footprint to say what yours will be. Remember the longest journey begins with a single step... Could make a useful display as well. Via BLDGBLOG, I came across the HEAT MAP of Haringey council in London. Using GOOGLE EARTH to explore the area as well, could identify areas with lots of particular types (and therefore quite likely age of houses...) The map itself can be browsed HERE. Apparently they also have images of part of Norwich. Also move on to look at the SCHOOL's FOOTPRINT. There are 4 areas to focus on: Use the SCHOOL WEBSITE to get images and explore the virtual tour to get ideas.

5	Introduction to Big Mac Geography Start with a McDonalds photojam of images of restaurants around the world. What makes McDonalds a global company ? Mapping exercise	Mind map activity with links from burger and packaging... Start blank and start to add some links and suggestions.
6	Move on to Globalisation	See the links to the GLOBALISATION section of the website. Lots of links on the page... WALTER'S GLOBAL JEANS... and the other activities can then follow on from this starting point.
7	Sarah McLachlan World on Fire Superb starter video (Zamzar it...) Has lots of potential uses...	YouTube Starter Video for lesson. This is a superb video for starter. Shows how the money that would normally be spent on a pop video could actually be used for more useful purposes.
8	LAMINATE FLOORING MYSTERY A suggestion from SLN relating to the story on Laminate Flooring http://environment.independent.co.uk/green_living/article2455033.ece	This could make a good mystery. Laminate flooring is very popular these days, although I prefer a nice carpet...
