2007 COASTAL FIELDWORK FOLLOW UP HELP

The write up is going to be similar to the example sheets which you were issued with before the event. You have been given a booklet based on the pages on the website. I have produced some PHOTO JAMS (and ANIMOTO) of the images. You will see other images in the lessons taken from previous years. I recommend that you ensure all images are ANNOTATED.
Hopefully you will make use of the images I have produced, or your own images...
Don't forget !
Remember the 2 locations: HOLKHAM SAND DUNES (a National Nature Reserve) and STIFFKEY SALT MARSH. Some useful management information on the Holkham site.
If you go down the road in Stiffkey a little (past the elephant hedge at Nellie's cottage) to 'The Red Lion' there is glacial drift on view in the car park above the pub. You will need to be able to draw a sketch map to show the location of the 2 sites. There are obviously many online sites which will allow you to find a location map (and also overlay the aerial photography if required...) or you can base it on another existing map. Can I remind you that this is a skill which you need for the exam.
HOLT HALL provided tutors for the day, and have also been responsible for the risk assessments and other issues relating to the trip. Thanks to Dr. Simon Woodhouse for his expert tuition over the last few years, and the information to update the URL...
TECHNIQUES and EQUIPMENT
POINT QUADRAT: This involves a piece of equipment which can be either 'shop bought' or hand made. The tutors from Holt Hall had some bought ones, along with homemade ones which were large lumps of wood with 6 inch nails driven into them. Need to have 10 points to allow you to generate points which can then be put into CHI SQUARED tests...
CHI SQUARED TEST
This test is carried out on 2 sets of data to compare them, and establish whether there are statistically significant differences between them.
THIS PAGE has information on the data that we collected on the 2 areas of the SALT MARSH in 2005.
Students were also issued with a copy of Geo Factsheet 120 (from September 2001) which looks at the Chi Squared Test and its usage.
Good luck !
Remember that the project will act as your major revision resource for the 2nd section of the COASTS TOPIC. This means that you need to cover the main aspects of SUCCESSION and ZONATION featured in the specification. You should also be considering the SAMPLING methods used, and also the LIMITATIONS of the methods used.
Rob Chambers from St. Ives was also in the area a few days before we were, and has posted the results of his work at his GEOBYTES site. This is worth a visit for additional information.
http://cgz.e2bn.net/e2bn/leas/c99/schools/cgz/accounts/staff/rchambers/GeoBytes/Homepage/index.htm is another way, and you need to follow the FIELDWORK link
