A2 Case Studies for Exam

ATMOSPHERIC SYSTEMS

Waugh has details on the Heat Island effect in London. Obviously you need to know about the actual differences in temperature between the central areas and the areas along the edge of the city. Would be useful to have the names of 2 of the boroughs to contrast and know the month in which the readings were taken...

Need to have details on a particular hurricane: I recommend Katrina

COLD ENVIRONMENTS

For features in the UK, we will use the English Lake District as our case study area.

CIRQUE-ARETE-TROUGH landscape: Langdale Valley has all of these features. Can be found in more detail elsewhere:

TROUGH END:

PATERNOSTER LAKES: Below the summit of Brandon Mountain, County Kerry, Republic of Ireland. Named after Pater Nostre: 'Our father', said while doing the beads of a rosary.

Paternoster lakes photographed from summit ridge of Brandon Mountain, Co. Kerry by Mister P in 1991. Fog had shrouded the mountain all day, and as we turned to abandon hope of seeing the view the clouds cleared and we had the most fantastic views towards the Aran Islands and across the Dingle peninsula

ARETE: Striding Edge, Lake District; Crib Goch, Snowdon are 2 often used examples. I've straddled many in my time in the Boiled Onions: on the Cuillin Ridge: also a mini limestone version just at the bottom of Winnat's Pass in the Peak District.

CIRQUE: Stickle Tarn, Great Langdale, Corrie Ghrunnda, Isle of Skye

Corrie Lagan, Black Cuillins, Isle of Skye, October 1993, photographed by Mister P. In the foreground is a polished rock knob. In the background are screes / talus slopes extending over 400 metres high towards the castellated ridges. This picture was taken about half an hour after conquering the Inaccessible Pinnacle on the ridge, and then riding the screes down to the corrie floor.

DIFFLUENCE: Great Langdale - Little Langdale.

BORROWDALE CASE STUDY: courtesy of Mr. Douglass.

DEPOSITION:

KAME / KAME TERRACE: this can be found along the edge of the Vale of Pickering in North Yorkshire.

DRUMLINS: Found around Hellifield, in the Yorkshire Dales.

There are some good examples in the area around Gargrave in Lancashire, which are documented HERE. It is a field of rolling drumlins (also sometimes called 'basket of eggs' topography) - visit the site and read on.

ERRATICS: Norber erratics, near Clapham in the Yorkshire Dales. The 'textbook' examples, often photographed, and fought on by our lower sixth students on the famous 1991 Fieldtrip.

Alaska / Canadian Arctic is the case study for outside of the UK, plus periglacial environments. The area which is passed through by the Trans-Alaskan pipeline is a good case study area, and is covered in the Ice, Land and Man book.

ECOSYSTEMS

We spent 3 lessons in the computer room collecting material on likely case studies.

Amazon Rainforest.
