As part of the unit, we go on a day fieldtrip in late September / early October of each year, along the North Norfolk coast to see the Salt Marshes at Stiffkey, and the Sand dune system and beach at Holkham, made famous at the end of the film 'Shakespeare in Love', and often named as one of the best beaches in the world, and rightly so.
All the information you need for your fieldwork write-up
If you need some more images of the coast. You can try the pictures of Mr. Barrett of Arthur Mellows Village College in Peterborough. He has supplied some nice images, which include PHOTOS OF COASTS: these include Cornwall, and Norfolk - including picture of Stiffkey Salt Marsh. Try also the CCHS site (see the SCHOOLS PAGE for the link)
Look out for more Sand Dune materials elsewhere on this page. It's important that you flesh out the fieldwork project with extra material on coastal ecosystems. This will be needed for Paper 1 on Physical Geography, and there is a 50% chance that it will also feature on the AGS paper (Advanced Geographical Skills)
Sand dunes are a fragile environment.
Threats to dunes include:
Sand extraction
Picking wild flowers
Dog walking
Access by motor vehicles and pedestrians
Bird watching: egg collecting
Picnics / barbecues
There is some fantastic information available at the SEASHORE website. This is part of the FIELD STUDIES COUNCIL site, and has useful information for different groups of people.
The details and images of the 2002 FIELDWORK DAY and some details on how you should write up the FIELDWORK REPORT are linked to from here. You need to look at these pages if you are to produce a decent piece of coursework.
Remember the work we do on the field-day will be needed for your exam - GUARANTEED!
