What exams will I have ?

3 exams:

Unit 1: Physical Environment (1 hour 15 minutes) – 15% (30%) of exam mark

3 structured questions from 6: one on each unit covered – each worth 20 marks – concentrate on final part of question which tests application of knowledge, with reference to specific examples

Unit 2: Human Environment (1 hour 15 minutes) – 15% (30%) of exam mark

3 structured questions from 6: one on each unit covered – each worth 20 marks – concentrate on final part of question which tests application of knowledge, with reference to specific examples

Module 3b: Applied Geographical Skills (1 hour 30 minutes) – 20% (40%) of exam mark

2 sections, both compulsory:

Section A: worth 40 marks – requires the use of a range of resource materials: applying skills in an unfamiliar context

Section B: worth 20 marks – based on fieldwork done by you

If the first part of the paper is Human based, the second will be Physical, and vice versa.

What will I have to revise ?

Everything, part from the ‘Synoptic’ sections of each unit (shown on the syllabus summaries you received at the start of each section)

What Skills will be tested on the AGS paper ?

Similar to those at GCSE level:

Using text, tables, maps (including choropleth and isopleth), aerial and satellite photos.

Using annotated sketch maps and diagrams.

Line graphs, bar charts and histograms. Pie charts and divided bars.

Scattergraphs, best fit lines/curves.

Triangular graphs.

Flow lines.

Sketch sections.

Proportional symbols.

Also some statistical techniques:

Mean, mode and median.

Quartiles and inter-quartile ranges.

Spearman rank correlation coefficient.

Chi square test. - work through the examples that we did in the lesson HERE.

Typical Questions relating to the fieldwork you carried out.

1. Outline the aims of the enquiry

2. Describe how your data was collected

3. Outline the methods chosen to represent the data

4. Explain why the methods chosen were the most appropriate

5. Summarise your conclusions

6. In what ways might your fieldwork have been improved ?

As you can see there are several points relating back to the fieldwork on the sand dunes at Holkham and the salt marsh at Stiffkey.

a) You need to re-read the fieldwork report

b) Read the relevant section of Waugh on sand dunes and salt marshes, and section in Pethick textbook (red one, which most of you still have signed out to you...)

c) Be able to answer all the questions above.
