Notes taken at BECTa Seminar on Future Research and Evaluation in ICT (organised in association with DfES)
February 28th 2002
If there is one teacher who does a lot of ICT work in a school it can create a few 'issues': other members of staff may be asked by pupils, 'Why don't you do what Mister X does ?'
Could use ICT for the dissemination of 'good practice'.
Research Methods
Pupil-pupil interview.
Video diaries.
'Script' for interviews.
Machine logging.
Have to develop a new pedagogy of e-learning. Need to consider what competencies will be required or valued by employers.
Could also be used as a tool for 'social inclusion'. One issue is the access of low-income families to the Internet.
Niel McLean - "research listed in the right places could be more 'valued' than that found useful by 20 000+ teachers" - hopefully Geography Pages is valued by teachers.
Also need to consider the 'provability' of research.
Could consider the 'Which Magazine' analogy. People can still buy a TV that works perfectly well even though it hasn't been in Which magazine.
Need to consider models of disseminating the research - what good is the research if no one ever gets to see the results.
