A 'blog' or 'weblog' is a relatively recent addition to the Internet's range of applications. It was developed to allow people to post their personal thoughts on the Internet without needing any software or technical knowledge of website design.

SETTING UP A BLOG

There are several sites which offer people the chance to set up a blog. These will be free, but will be adverts on the screens. A series of templates offer a degree of choice over page layout. Some BLOG hosting and producing sites are shown below (no suggestion is made that any of these are preferred over the others...)

BLOGGER is one site which offers you the chance to set up a weblog. Others include the following:

One important aspect to bear in mind is that BLOGGER is owned by GOOGLE. This may have a bearing on your choice of site. There are some blogging tools on the GOOGLE TOOLBAR which can be downloaded for your machine.

Once you have filled in these fields and created your account, go on to the next stage.

If you want other people to have access to your BLOG: to see your postings, you will have to 'tick' the box next to PUBLIC BLOG so that it is, well, public....

Then choose a name for the blog, which will determine its final URL. Pick a memorable name.

Issue 73 of WEB USER (22 Dec 03-07 Jan 04) has an article on BLOGGING and a very useful step-by-step guide to setting up a BLOG on the XANGA website. Click the link below to go to XANGA.

POSTING TO YOUR BLOG

The system will be very similar with all BLOG hosting services, but I'll use BLOGGER again as an example.

You go to BLOGGER.COM or XANGA or whichever free BLOG service you decided on.

LOG IN: you'll need the details you set up when you created the BLOG in the first place.

Once you've logged in, you'll be presented with a screen which allows you to type your latest post, and then press the button marked PUBLISH and it will be added to the site. Even then it can be edited or removed at your discretion, so if you set up a blog for your students then each entry can be adapted or removed as necessary. It's fast, it's easy, it's GEO BLOGS!

Please have a go and then tell me about it - let's get some momentum going...
