CHANGES IN RIVER CHARACTERISTICS DOWNSTREAM

In the box on left hand side of the diagram, put one of the following symbols:

An arrow pointing upwards: if the variable increases downstream

An arrow pointing downwards: if the variable decreases downstream

A horizontal arrow: if the variable stays the same

Velocity of the water flowing in the channel (V)
Channel roughness (shown by 'Manning's 'n' coefficient)
Friction between the water and the bed/banks
  Channel width
  Channel depth
  Turbulence within the channel
  Cross-sectional area (A)
  Discharge of the river (Q)
Size of particles making up the load
  Angularity of the bedload
  Channel gradient
Channel efficiency (as shown by hydraulic radius)
