CARBON REDUCTION

We all produce carbon dioxide in large quantities as a result of our everyday activities. The site below tries to persuade us to reduce the amount we produce by making a pledge or pledges to change small aspects of our daily routines...

CRed

CRed is a project which operates in the East of England. CRed relates to CARBON REDUCTION. The target is to achieve a 60% reduction in the 9 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide which each person produces on average each year. A site in association with the regional paper the EDP can be found by clicking THIS LINK TO THE EDP. There are obvious implications for a low lying area like Norfolk if climate change due to carbon dioxide (and other gases) occurs as predicted. There is also a clear link to GEOGRAPHY as being the most relevant curriculum subject in this field. Some ideas for PLEDGES to sign up to (with a FREEPOST postcard in many cases) are:

To install a minimum of 3 energy saving light bulbs

To always reach for a jumper first before going for the thermostat

To ensure that electrical appliances are not left on stand by when not in use

To install loft insulation that is at least 200mm thick

One way of getting a grip on the idea is to calculate your ecological 'FOOTPRINT'. This is something featured on a number of websites (see the link lower down the page)

The project also links in with the idea of FOOD MILES.

From THIS PAGE you can download an Excel spreadsheet which acts as a CARBON CALCULATOR.

The CRed site offers LINKS to a number of related organisations:

The TYNDALL CENTRE of the University of East Anglia (UEA) which also has a CLIMATIC RESEARCH UNIT (CRU)

The CLIMATE GROUP is an organisation based in the USA, which examines the financial implications of emission reductions.

Part of the project is to persuade people to use green energy rather than the old power stations which it refers to as CARBON DINOSAURS with this link to the FRIENDS OF THE EARTH site.

WWF are running a course in Education for Sustainable Development in January-March 2004.
