BEFORE THE DAY

Managed to secure a place on this course, which is on the first day of the February half-term 2006, so in advance of the day, started to collect my thoughts as to my most recent 'favourite' ideas for websites / software etc. Should be good to meet up with some other like minded creative types.

Here are some of the ideas I have come across recently which I find the most interesting / exciting / intriguing and which lend themselves to creativity.

1. Google Earth: goes without saying

It's obvious that I would include this.

2. Podcasting

Might be an idea to record some audio while we were there and assemble something which feeds back what we created.

3. Audio annotation of Powerpoint slides

An idea I was reminded of by a recent post by Noel Jenkins, but which has good potential for oral assessment.

4. Geo ICT club

Launching in March.

5. Flagrant Disregard FLICKR tools

I love these tools. They can be used in so many ways to tart up basic resources.

6. GeoGaming

Ideas:

Monopoly: Blank maps of an area and justify the choice of streets.

Also link to Guardian tube map of music, which is now available from TfL

Digital cameras to record street signs - working out routes to take in as many as possible.

GPS tracking.

http://www.typenow.net/themed.htm - this is a site which would be useful in a number of lessons. It offers a great series of fonts, which are based on TV series, FILMS etc.

This means that you can link the work to a particular font to create a 'mood' or theme for a piece of work which is related to the geographical content.

GOOGLE EARTH

The possibility of exploring the earth, and setting up tours...

Also EARTH PLOT and MAGNALOX for plotting data on GE.

ON THE DAY

Dan asked us to bring along ideas for 4 questions which he provided in advance...

1) Bring an object that has as little to do with education, geography and ICT as possible, but is special to you for some reason.

This is actually quite difficult for me to do as most of my special objects are linked to Geography.

I shall probably bring my iPod on the day, but ended up taking Sigur Ros 'Takk'

2) Choose a website that is useful for geography and bring along its address

Some 'no brainers' here: http://www.geographypages.co.uk, although I appeared on a website list which Dan gave out.

Also some others which are useful for a range of other applications too.

3) Think of a problem to do with geography education that you would like solving

I'd like to encourage more teachers to share their resources.

Reversing the decline in people opting for GCSE Geography

Ideas for teaching Newly Industrialising Countries...

4) Feel free to bring along anything to do with geography education and ICT that you are willing to "show and tell"

Underground map of Geography concepts ?

Bob Lang, AP and Stuart Hitch producing their masterpiece...

AFTER THE DAY

I'll give some feedback on how I have used some of the ideas that I developed on the day at 21CC after the event.

Dan came out with some excellent collaborative ideas which will hopefully take place.
