CROWDED COASTS

For Edexcel 'AS' Geography

This is likely to be a popular unit with a lot of schools, although some might be a bit 'fed up' with coasts...

We are likely to start with HUNSTANTON, as our local Victorian coastal resort, although we can also whizz around the North Norfolk coast to a number of locations such as SHERINGHAM, CROMER and GREAT YARMOUTH.

Will also mention the old fave the HOLDERNESS coast I would have thought.

Check the AS COASTS page for some further / existing resources.

There are 4 ENQUIRY QUESTIONS here...

1. Competition for coasts: Why is the coastal zone so favoured for development ?

Doesn't everyone want a sea view from their house ?

How much does that add to the cost of housing ?

A GUARDIAN article here gives some interesting information.

2. Coping with pressure: How do various coastal developments create competition and conflict ? How can these pressures be resolved ?

We will use the JURASSIC COAST as an example here.

JURASSIC COAST has a very useful website.

Some good DOWNLOADS for the Jurassic Coast, including the MSC Napoli

Will be using some existing resources produced by Val Vannet on the management of this stretch of coastline, and also some new materials on the GEOGRAPHY TEACHING TODAY website.

Sand Dunes - Holkham and Salt Marsh - Stiffkey - will use data gathered on previous visits to these places

3. Increasing risk: How is coastal development increasingly at risk from and vulnerable to physical processes ?

Rapid erosion: HOLDERNESS

Flooding: THAMES GATEWAY / Norfolk / East Coast Floods

4. Coastal Management: How is coastal management adapting to new ideas and situations ?

How effective is coastal protection ?

Sustainable approaches ?
