EU LESSONS

Lesson 1: Introduction to the EU

Need an outline map of the EU / Europe - one that's not already labelled with the names of the countries. These can be downloaded from various online sources. Also put one up on the Smartboard.

Aim is to build up the member states according to the Year in which they joined. Helps to reinforce the names of countries, and also presentation skills, atlas work and oral skills. Although this may sound a little basic, they go down very well each time I do this. Students will also need to build up a list in their books to go along with the map.

I usually start by asking the students to write down the names of countries which they think are in the EU: a colleague had a student say that Fiji was in the EU...Generally any place they've heard of has a chance of making it in.

Then we start with the original members: those which signed the Treaty of Rome. I use an old article from the Guardian which gives details on joining dates.

Treaty of Rome (1957) - original signatories: Benelux countries (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg), France, Germany and Italy.

Joined in January 1973: UK, Ireland (Eire) and Denmark

Joined in January 1981: Greece

Joined in January 1986: Spain and Portugal

Joined in January 1995: Austria, Sweden and Finland (Norway held a referendum but said 'No-way')

I then add each set of nations which joined after that, so there are 5 colours needed. They have to guess which countries joined as we go along, and they can see how the original 'core' countries have been added to, and also notice how Switzerland remains a blank in the middle.

With a new digital projector this could be done with PAINT, and filled in on the screen.

2. ITALY: FACT or OPINION (a STARTER activity...)

Which of these are fact and which of these are opinion ?

(of course this can be adapted to any European nation - or outside of Europe...)

We are cheerful and like talking.

We often get emotional and over-excited

We like music, especially Opera

We like to be fashionably dressed

Most of us are religions, and are Roman Catholics

We have strong family links and we like children. We look after the elderly

We spend more money on food and drink than any other EU country

We like sport, especially motor racing and football

We have produced many famous painters, sculptors, inventors, composers and writers

3. EU LITERACY EXERCISE

An exercise which looks at the EU, but also gets pupils thinking about literacy by having answers in code, and also featuring anagrams. Ready to use...

4. DECISION TIME FOR GIUSEPPE COSANOSTRO

This is a MYSTERY which has been available for about a year now on the SLN GEOGRAPHY site. It was produced by Paul Thompson from Ounsdale High School. It's about the decision made by a young Italian man as to whether to stay in his home in Aliano (a village in the south of Italy), or to move and look for work.

What are the BACKGROUND cards, and what are the TRIGGERS which would influence a decision.

Link it in to the factors which lead to migration. Remember that one of them is INERTIA: this has to be overcome before people make the decision to move.

Full instructions and the necessary cards are available to download from HERE.

5. EU FLASH GAME - COUNTRY IDENTIFICATION

Check out the FLASH GAME here. Identify the countries within the time limit.

Malta

There are likely to be big changes later this year (2004) when the extra countries join the EU. There were fears that this would lead to a massive influx in migration into the area. A study has concluded that this would not be the case, as some of the new member states will be come the destination of migrants themselves.

There will be major changes due to EU enlargement.

10 countries are scheduled to join the existing 15 countries to make it up to 25 countries.

Can you name the current members of the EU ?

Here are some anagrams of the countries that are going to be joining - see if you can work them out, and write them in the space next to the anagram.
