The Kings Arms, York. This pub is regularly flooded, as it was in Summer 2002. Photo by Mister P.
You will have 2 lessons to carry out this task.
The first lesson should be spent on the CAUSES of the flooding.
The second lesson will perhaps be spent looking at the EFFECTS of the flooding.
This needs to be presented in the form of:
a Word document or a PowerPoint presentation
This has to be in the context of one particular flood event from the UK.
Suggested flood events are:
the Yorkshire floods of 2000 which affected the River Derwent and other rivers flowing through York.
or
The Lynmouth floods of August 1952
(See the 'AS' Hydrology page for direct links or try some GOOGLE Web and Image searches using appropriate search strings..)
Make sure that the presentation / document includes the following aspects:
A map to locate the area affected by the floods
Clear explanations on the causes both Physical and Human.
Details on the effects of the Flooding itself: need to consider the immediate impacts of the flood, and the longer term impacts - how long did it take to clear up the area ?
Also consider the lessons learned. How have people responded to the flood and changed the river's channel or the nature of the settlements to reduce the possible impact of future events.
Can the flood risk ever be reduced to zero ?
Try to find out about what is called the 'RETURN PERIOD' of events like floods. When people talk about a '100 Year Flood' or a '50 Year Flood what does this actually mean ?
