WHAT DOES YOUR LEVEL MEAN IN GEOGRAPHY ?

HOW CAN YOU GO UP TO THE NEXT LEVEL ?

A suggested list

This refers to extended pieces of work, rather than individual tasks or lessons. A final TA level can only realistically be provided at the end of KS3. The following statements might be useful to re-word for students to appreciate how they can increase their chances of providing appropriate evidence for levels.

Level 3

You follow instructions to investigate a set question or hypothesis.

You collect some data, and draw some maps or graphs.

You can give some reasons for the observations which you make.

The work is rather basic with very little produced in the way of writing and graphs.

Level 4

You suggest some possible questions or hypotheses which could be studied yourself.

You are shown how to use a range of data collection and presentation techniques.

You use a range of evidence and suitable geographical language, when either DESCRIBING or EXPLAINING (could use the SLN resources for BETTER descriptions and explanations)

You are mainly told what to do by the teacher.

Level 5

You identify some good questions or hypotheses to investigate.

You receive some help with data collection methods.

You select and use appropriate skills and presentation techniques.

You select and draw good graphs.

You select and use evidence to help investigate, and to write up the project using EXPLANATIONS and you come to suitable conclusions.

Level 6

You do all of Level 5, but also:

You suggest how to complete all stages of the investigation (including data collection)

You select and use a WIDE RANGE of skills and presentation techniques

You reach good conclusions using the evidence you have found

Level 7

You do all of Level 6 but do so with:

More independence

More accuracy

More details

More evidence

Level 8

As Level 7, but to an excellent standard reaching conclusions that are clearly backed by the evidence
