Glaciers move once they accumulate enough mass to start moving. There are 2 main mechanisms for movement:
Basal sliding
Internal deformation
Glaciers move differently if they have a different temperature profile from the surface to the base.
There are several questions.
Need Nagle: "Cold Environments": EPICS series: pp. 17-22
1. What did James Forbes learn about glacier movement from his experiments in 1842 ?
2. What factors control the rate of movement of a glacier ?
3. How do glaciers move ?
4. What features form on or around a glacier as a result of its movement ?
