Brings together today's rapid economic changes which are impacting unfairly on people across the globe, and the related international issues of population change and migration.
There was a debate on the BBC News TALKING POINT page in July 2001. This is still available in Archived form HERE. There are 27 pages of e-mail contributions from people which could be used as the basis of prompt quotes: statements which students could react and respond to. The basic title of this was 'GLOBALISATION: GOOD OR BAD ?' - this will prove useful if you are doing some of the lessons listed later on this page.
Also worth checking out Geo Factsheet 172: "The Challenge of Globalisation"
There is a National Teachers' Conference in London on the 4th of July 2008 run by Philip Allan which I hope to attend.
This topic has 7 ENQUIRY questions, split into 2 sections.
Start by looking at my GLOBALISATION page.
A: WHAT GLOBALISATION MEANS
Need to cover the concepts and definitions of globalisation.
The geography of financial flows shaped through the world financial market creates geographies of development and under-development, or connected and disconnected.
Need to consider the relationships between countries and regions of the world and the global economy.
China will need to be an important focus for this particular section. More to come on this on the CHINA page.
1. Globalisation: What is Globalisation and how is it changing people's lives ?
Need to consider the myths surrounding the geographies of globalisation. What is Globalisation and what are its different forms ?
Refer to the globalisation of consumption as well as production, and various other types of the G word...
History of globalisation - a look back at colonies / British empire / Commonwealth ? Remember when the world was pink, Windrush etc. Looks like good stuff here...
'Disneyfied' world - Mickey Mouse ears anyone ? Perhaps students could make a pair of Disney ears, where one ear is the positives and one is the negatives of the growth of the Disney 'brand'... Just an idea...
A useful article here is an article in the NEW INTERNATIONALIST magazine. This WEBPAGE has some extracts and ideas that are worth developing... "Disneyfication" as an adaptation of globalisation....
I have lots of nice Disney images from a recent family holiday there which we can use for this unit. Check out my FLICKR account for some of these.
I like this idea: "IT'S A SMALL WORLD...."
Which takes the ideas of one of the most popular Disney rides. I have the theme tune music on CD too which is good....
And here's me in Disneyland in my GGiP T-shirt as a starter image if you want it...
Click to make me bigger...
An interesting article HERE on a teacher who was considering some direct action against Disney - not sure I'd go quite that far...
Also this LENGTHY ARTICLE on the way that Disney represents the world - the term Cultural Imperialism is often used in this respect...
2. Global Groupings: What are the main groupings of nations ? What differences in levels of power and wealth exist ?
Image by Alex Murchie of new Olympics stadium
What do we mean by the 'third world' and does one still exist. Are our existing labels of MEDC / LEDC still adequate ?
TRADING BLOCS - some existing resources on the A2 ECONOMIC SYSTEMS section that can be adapted.
World trade mapping would be useful here - again need to source some images and statistics.
3: Global Networks: Why, as places and societies become more interconnected, do some places still show extreme wealth and poverty ?
Need to examine the debate over interaction between places.
Need to discuss the globalising tendencies of our world.
A very useful article I came across recently in a search was published on the website of the Carnegie Endowment for International peace website by Branko Milanovic, and was on Learning about Globalization by watching a soccer game...
Importance of the BOSMAN RULING in this.
Some interesting ideas on the globalisation of football and sport - the recent (quickly shelved) plans by the Premier League.
INDIA would be a useful focus for this.
How has the growth of Bangalore affected people in the area, and other parts of India ? An Anglo-Indian world ?
Also CHINA once again.
How about the impact of TNCs as well in this section ? Globalisation is often linked with TNCs, but not all TNCs are the same.
B: HOW GLOBALISATION AFFECTS POPULATION IN THE UK and EUROPE
This has a specific geographical focus on the UK and Europe, as the title suggests. It looks at the impact of international migration and the effect of this on population structure. There are 2 particular movements: New Commonwealth migrants and the Eastern European migrants from the A8 countries (an ongoing process)
4. Roots: How does evidence from personal, local and national sources help us understand the pattern of population change in the UK ?
Make use of a few recent past paper questions which have been in this area and used Census information.
Census Form is available to download as a PDF. Could consider the issues with the Census as a planning tool.
Plenty of resources to do with the UK's AGEING POPULATION at my POPULATION PAGE.
5. On the move: How is migration changing the face of the EU ?
Need to develop the students' understanding of the issues of migration, and how it is changing the places that people leave and the places they arrive in.
New Commonwealth immigration. Windrush.
Retirement - recent article on the 500 000 who left the UK last year for various places. Growth of ex-pat communities in places like Spain and Florida.
Plenty of existing resources for this on the AS POPULATION MIGRATION page.
C: THE EFFECTS OF GLOBALISATION ON URBAN GROWTH
Growth of world cities. Characteristics of World Cities. Good Philip Allan book in this area, and also several articles in Geography Review.
India: check out the ideas on Billionaires and Bollywood. The growth of cities such as Bangalore have not resulted in a universal increase in the quality of life for people. Is there a 'two-speed' society ?
What jobs are going to be done by people in the UK ?
6. World Cities: What is driving the 'new' urbanisation ? What are its consequences ?
Plenty of existing resources on my URBANISATION page.
Focus on cities such as Los Angeles and more recent LEDC cities: we will consider Chongqing. Have Michael Palin DVD from the 1980s and the more recent DVD from our Chinese partner school. Will also
7. Global challenges for the future: What are the social and environmental consequences of globalisation ? Can we manage these changes for a better world ?
Need to consider social and environmental consequences.
Deforestation of the tropical rain forests would be useful angle as there are plenty of resources here.
Fairtrade ?
How will the recent 'abdication' of Fidel Castro in Cuba affect the island and its relationship with the USA ?
