REACHING THE HARD TO REACH WITH ICT: NORFOLK: MAY 2006
"ATTENTION GRABBING GEOGRAPHY"
New for February 2006
Here's the description of the session which will go in the conference details.
Title: “Attention Grabbing Geography”
This session will demonstrate some ideas for attracting the attention of students in the first few minutes of the lesson, and then maintaining their interest through the creative use of ICT.
It is grounded in practical ideas used by practising teachers which can be embedded within any Geography lesson, but which could also be adapted to various topics and subject areas.
The resources used were produced by the workshop leader and by members of a collaborative online community which has developed at the Staffordshire Learning Network. Participants in the workshop will be encouraged to provide some ideas, and to continue to develop their own practice. A page of links and downloads will be developed at Alan Parkinson's own website: http://www.geographypages.co.uk/hardtoreach.htm
and here it is....
I have been asked to present a session or two at an ICT conference in Norfolk in May 2006. On this page will appear some ideas for reaching the 'hard to reach' with ICT. One key idea is to produce an 'inclusive classroom'.
Need to have a few examples of using Starters.
First aim is to engage as the students walk through the door. This can be achieved by a high impact STARTER
For this, I will use some examples produced by TONY CASSIDY and others (and myself)
Need to ensure that all the audience appreciate a concept, even non-geographers.
Impact of Google Earth in place and location.
When the lesson starts, you then need to use ideas to allow students to 'THRIVE'...
What could make everyone THRIVE ?
Billy Jonas and Mount Saint Helens, plus Zach and Miles' song
OK, you've managed to get their attention and involve them in the lesson - what next ?
How do you maintain students' concentration ?
Content Generator
Geography of Sport: laminated Yellow and Red cards...
It is also important to engage students with an aspect with which they are familiar.
Spot the TOPIC ?
Different familiar images which are then linked in with topics which are to be taught...
e.g. Eastenders opening theme tune and image of meander on Thames - topic ?
The Assessment Reform Group, in 2002 suggested that there should be more of some things and less of others..
This is described in a table in Di Swift's book, which is discussed on the SEN page of the website.
