HURRICANES / TROPICAL CYCLONES

Last updated July 2008 - this page now ARCHIVED

Tropical storms have to be studied on Edexcel 'A' syllabus at A2 level. They may also be referenced in the Synoptic paper.

They also appear in most GCSE Specifications

Added CYCLONE NARGIS page.

Grenada: Over 90% of buildings in Grenada were destroyed, and half the 90 000 population were made homeless and 39 killed. The Red Cross and Oxfam and various volunteers were involved in the rebuilding - many skilled craftsmen were offered free holidays to the island in exchange for their labour. Many of the spice farms have been ruined however, and people are still living in tents.

Cayman Islands: Little Cayman reopened to tourists almost immediately after, but Grand Cayman was worse affected. Many hotels brought renovations forward. The white sand beaches are still there, and the curfew which was imposed to stop looting is now only for 5 hours during the night...

Jamaica: 90% of hotels and attractions are open even in Negril (which was damaged by 30 foot high waves which filled buildings with sand)    (The Observer, 14/11/04)

LESSON RESOURCES

1. TASKS (using Internet / textbooks as a research tool....)

1. Outline the conditions required for a hurricane to form.

What is the critical sea temperature ?

What are the wind speed thresholds which must be passed...

What is the Saffir Simpson scale ?

What is the usual track that Hurricanes take ?

Where within a hurricane are the strongest winds ?

2. Outline the effects of a recent hurricane (i.e. one in 2006 season) – there is a very obvious candidate... Hurricane Katrina - there are numerous programmes...

3. Go to: http://weather.unisys.com/hurricane/atlantic/

and pick a Hurricane from this season (perhaps the same one as you did for question 2) – track its course on the tracking chart provided. Pick the data closest to midday: one plot for each day.

2. The ORLANDO SENTINEL offers various useful resources, notably a plotting chart. They also offer a booklet of excellent advice if you live in the area, which can be useful for case studies. This can be accessed and printed off.

3. Try HURRICANE ADVISORIES site for the latest, er... hurricane advisories.

4. A FLASH ANIMATION of the formation of Hurricanes can be viewed at THE GUARDIAN. Grab it while you can...

5. The BEST SITE FOR TEACHING ABOUT HURRICANES, although you'll need BROADBAND, and preferably have loaded the stuff into cache before using with a group is the EDUCATION BRIDGE produced by the NATIONAL CENTRE FOR ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH. This has resources for the teaching of Hurricanes. The resource I looked at is something called HURRICANE STRIKE ! It uses ANIMATIONS to take you through all the stages of preparing for a HURRICANE STRIKE. Recommended.

The effects of each hurricane are now archived at various news sites, and a CASE STUDY can soon be built up around them.

6. Personal experiences of Hurricanes Charley and Bonnie which people I know sent to me.

7. August 2005: HURRICANE KATRINA - the recommended case study for KES students

A life-changing storm for hundreds of thousands of people, and one which continued to dominate the US media for weeks afterwards, and is still creating headlines months later as the city begins to be rebuilt, and people slowly decide to return to their neighbourhoods. There are lots of resources on all the major NEWS sites, and FLASH animations to use.

8. CYCLONE NARGIS: May 2008

This may well become a tragedy to rival the tsunami.

It also makes a fascinating comparison with the KATRINA event. Rob Chambers produced a list of links shortly after the event, but of course the scale of the event rapidly changed.
