ICT MATERIALS FOR G.C.S.E STUDENTS & TEACHERS
USEFUL SITES - ANY OF THESE WILL PROVIDE SOME HELP FOR YOU
Can I also suggest that you head over to TORC HIGH SCHOOL site (Tamworth) to check out the excellent resource produced and made available by BROOKERRY. It is for GNVQ ICT but it includes, for example, some excellent materials on using DATABASES which would be particularly useful for my current Year 11 group. Recommended.
Get yourself off HERE to download a free 30 plus page PDF resource on Computer Systems which will make a marvellous revision resource. All you need for COMPUTER SYSTEMS....
The Specification, Assessment materials and other teacher and pupil support can be downloaded from the EDEXCEL WEBSITE. They have added a lot of supplementary information. It is recommended that you become familiar with the nature of the exam and the assessment that you will be undertaking at the end of the course. I also have some useful textbooks, and others are located in the library. It is important that GCSE students start to take some responsibility for their own learning. There is a tendency for students to inflate their own knowledge - being able to switch on the Office Assistant or change the Desktop colour does not make you an expert....
An obvious place to start is ICT GCSE. This offers Animations, Downloads and Exercises. This will help with the homework tasks you will be set on a regular basis. Recommended.
There are some excellent materials at the ICT TEACHER site. There are POWERPOINTS which are useful for GCSE and AS / A2. Each section of the course has been covered. This site is Recommended for KES pupils. There is also a nice section of Pupils' work, with an opportunity to download materials and notes. Of course, you also have your textbook.
Some good materials from IN 2 EDU. This offers a range of software which can be downloaded or used online, particularly for building different types of resources such as crosswords, word searches etc.
SCHOOLZONE has some useful materials. There are some helpful links to follow from this general ICT page.
Some materials for OCR at ASHFORDMAN. This is a growing site with some new materials added recently.
The KING GEORGE V SCHOOL in Hong Kong has a great KS4 area, with materials on THEORY, but also some SKILLS DEVELOPMENT areas covering Spreadsheets and Databases. These would also be helpful for 'AS' students. Recommended.
Several schools have placed useful ICT materials online. Obviously there's this humble effort. Then try the following:
KJS SCHOOL in Essex. This has materials on a range of levels. Recommended.
SOHAM VILLAGE COLLEGE has some good GCSE materials. There are illustrated sheets on all aspects of the GCSE course: Year 10 and Year 11 modules. There are a total of 52 modules to work through - browse through to get the full benefit. Recommended.
The same site has a long list of COMPUTER TERMS and ACRONYMS. This has a useful definition of the main computing terms that you will need.
Not content with producing an excellent GEOGRAPHY site, KESGRAVE School in Suffolk has also produced an excellent ICT site. Head for the striking home page and you can link through to KS3, KS4 and KS5 materials. There's also a bookshop and a High achievers page, plus links to ICT news headlines which are helpful when teaching about the role of ICT in society. Recommended.
If you want some illustrated notes for GCSE Revision, or to use in a lesson situation, go to the ICT PAGES of Katharine Lady Berkeley's School. These are similar to the materials in the textbook "GCSE ICT SUCCESS" by Gareth Williams, produced by Pearson Publishing, which is also a great resource - clearly laid out and heavily illustrated. The KLB pages are Recommended.
SCHOOL RESOURCES has some useful exercises on SPREADSHEETS. Go HOME for some other useful materials.
Could use a site such as BROADBAND SUPPLIERS to compare rates for BROADBAND and work out the cheaper deals over the course of a year when taking into account ACTIVATION FEE, MODEM costs and MONTHLY FEE, perhaps for a range of download speeds.
This INTERNET MAGAZINE article looks at the ENVIRONMENTAL COSTS of computers.
ICY TEA: say it and it sounds like ICT... has a range of VIDEOS which you can look at - little FLASH animations. They cover the main EXCEL functions.
There are plenty of WORD DOCUMENTS on a range of APPLIED ICT issues produced by PETE C from HARTSHEAD School.
EWART has some great illustrated notes you can use. Also some useful COURSEWORK RESOURCES.
If you want to get a definition of a term try FOLDOC: the Free Online Dictionary of Computing.
For information on CUSTOMER RIGHTS when BUYING ONLINE, go to the OFFICE OF FAIR TRADING's site. As the site says:
"Shopping on the internet is quick and convenient and should be no riskier than buying by mail order or on the phone"
Try E-MAN at the Edensor High School site for various QUESTIONS. Try some of them.
Another useful site is that of Jan at the long-running JEGS WORKS site. This has a good set of COMPUTER BASICS which include a series of lessons which cover the following topics: oh, and the site is Recommended.
Computer Types
Applications
Input, Processing and Output
Storage
Computer to Computer
System Software
Programming
Check out Lincolnshire's excellent LIGHTHOUSE for LEARNING site which has loads of resources for the 3 Units of APPLIED ICT. There are documents, spreadsheets and powerpoints. Recommended. The link will take you to the UNIT 1 resources, and you can navigate from there.
STUDY SUPPORT
Each student has been issued with a copy of the textbook - this needs to be the focus of regular reading:
"GCSE ICT for EDEXCEL" by Ken Slee, Molly Wischhusen, Janet Snell and Jenny Johnson
The support pages for the use of this book are HERE. Staff also have access to the Teachers' Handbook. We shall be setting exercises for the THEORY section of the course.
The department also has access to the following resource:
GCSE ICT COMPANION by P.Meakin
This is available on the network on PUPILS ON CURRICULUM (U) in the USERS folder. It is there at all times. Computer Club is on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.... You have a great deal of assistance. Mr. McLean also gives up time on a Tuesday each week for Coursework support.
Also the websites listed on the ICT section of GeographyPages, in particular ICT TEACHER and FAT MAX.
Remember the other key learning resource we have subscribed too at KES.
COURSEWORK PROJECT GUIDELINES
You have been given a booklet which is also available for download HERE (if link is not yet active, it will be soon....)
The aim is to produce a SOLUTION for an actual END USER. This should be an ACTUAL PERSON !!
There is more information on similar themes at THE TEACHER site. This looks at some of the software that could be used to design materials for a THEME PARK.
There are 4 pieces of COURSEWORK that you will be completing, so this is just one! Already it's spreading out the candidates between the cans and the cannots....
You will be designing a website for an end-user. This could be the same end-user that you had for the desktop publishing.
Options for software to use are Front Page (in B2 only), PowerPoint and Publisher, all of which allow design facilities and hyperlinking.
Produce a spreadsheet, perhaps for the same end-user.
This needs to have a combination of functions.
Make sure that you are using the full range of features.
Should ideally demonstrate that you can use the various LOOKUPs, FORMs, MACROs etc.
Could be set in the same context as previous coursework, or the theatre mentioned in the context pre-release materials.
You can use the same end-user again possibly.
Need to put together a database which has 2 or 3 tables linked together.
We have used the SKILLSBUILDER books to build skills, and then given you a sample to work through. Remember that there is also a WEIGHT WATCHERS example in the back of the Skillsbuilder books.
There are, as always, plenty of sites on the internet to help you, and we have also provided a BOOKLET as always with information and a sample project which is a STUDENT MARKBOOK.
The KJS SCHOOL as always has something of value for you.
There's a link from there to other places too.
As with the other pieces of coursework it is the PROCESS and the DOCUMENTATION as much as the product which gets marks.
Try to ensure that you add SUB FORMS and VALIDATION, and also show that you can create a MAIL MERGE using the information in the database.
ICT TEACHER site mentioned earlier takes you through the process of producing a database.
DOWNLOAD a FRAMEWORK FOR WRITING UP YOUR PROJECT.
