SET TEXT FOR 'AS' STUDENTS

"The Machine Stops" by E.M. Forster

This short story, written in 1909 looks at a society where machines control everything, and people live in underground honeycombs and communicate through them, and get to the point where they don't even want to be touched by other people. One man wants to rebel against this, and there is a moment when the machine, which people have had in their ears since they were born, stops as it has worn down and is unable to repair itself, and there is a terrible silence. Humanity has to go back to the surface, to face the sun...
