There was major flooding in parts of the country in June 2007
The area that was most affected was the area of South Yorkshire which includes Sheffield (including Meadowhall), Rotherham and Doncaster, across as far as Hull. This is my home area, and I know a lot of the areas that were affected...

http://www.geography.org.uk/resources/june2007floods/ - this is likely to become a standard case study for a large part of the UK's schools, assuming you can fit it into the CONCEPT LED curriculum... I know that publishers are already rewriting books to fit this case study in...
Hint: If you have Sky, and some major event has happened in a part of the country where you don't live, make sure that you check out the regional news magazines at around 6.30 pm that evening for useful video material...
