AIMS OF THE DAY

INVESTIGATION of the following:

a) Formation of Valley: Glacial processes

b) Post-glacial changes

c) Glacial features: Corrie, Glacial Trough, Roche Moutonnees, Col, Moraines

d) Human Use of a Glaciated area: Land use in the Valley

e) Footpath erosion: tourist use of the area

SKILLS:

a) Field sketching

b) Sketch section

c) Till Fabric analysis

d) Identification of features and evidence of processes in the field

e) Pedestrian count - use of Stickle Tarn footpath

Need to ensure you have adequate information on 3 specific locations to be able to answer the question on glacial environments section of the final exam.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Will be covering:

- Stickle Tarn area

- Birk Knoll (Col)

- Skelwith Bridge

Note earlier visit to Borrowdale area near Keswick to look at larger scale features and effect of underlying geology.

Important points:

- Don’t necessarily need a corrie for gathering ice and starting a glacier

- What formed the flat valley floor ?

- Is Stickle Tarn completely natural ?

- How is the area used ?

- How has the Stickle Tarn footpath be designed to reduce the impact of tourist use of the area ?
