GRAPHIC ORGANISERS

Graphic organisers are an idea which I came across this year, following a visit by a colleague to Australia, where they use thinking skills a lot. Graphic Organisers are basically diagrams to help you to organise your thoughts. Thanks to Sarah Barnacle for her presentation at a recent network meeting, which provides the basis for this section of the page.

You will have probably heard of these before:

DIAMOND RANKING

VENN DIAGRAMS - 2 or 3 or 4 circles overlapping

PMI - Plus, Minus and Interesting (could be key facts / opinions /

Y DIAGRAMS

Used for 3 categories e.g. Social, Economic and Environmental or Primary, Secondary and Tertiary or Cause, Effect and Solution or Upper/Middle/Lower course of a river.

The presence or absence of labels can be interesting and prove a point.

OPV: Other People's Views

Important to provide a context which the students are familiar with when launching a new Graphic Organiser.

Also need to follow up the activity with a PLENARY. Good questions for the Plenary might include

DON'T FORGET TO PEE !!

POINT - EXAMPLE - EXPLANATION

Discovered the PEE burger again, and borrowed the image from a HISTORY colleague.
