LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC RESOURCES

A long term case study of urban regeneration for A2 Geography & Synoptic paper

"There is no city like London. It is a wonderfully diverse and open city providing a home to hundreds of different nationalities from all over the world. I can't think of a better place than London to hold an event that unites the world."

The websites which had information about the bid are still available.

Presumably the ones for the other cities could also be seen, and perhaps compared. One of the issues with the London bid is that everything is new, and many of the venues are built to be recycled, and relocated at the end of the year.

LONDON2012 has a range of materials. This is a great place to start your explorations.

There has been a lot of discussion on all the major news channels and relevant articles will be in their archive for searching. Newspapers also had various columnists talking about the issues, and cartoonists will also have had their say on the issue.

The main area for redevelopment is in Stratford, to the east of London. The LDA (London Development Agency) is heavily involved in the process.

A good start would be an online mapping service to find a map of the site, or a KML file for GOOGLE EARTH perhaps...

Also watch the film THE BID made by AGITATE films.

Progress is being made towards the development of the site. The site extends to 500 acres. Apparently Sortex: one of the largest firms on the site has recently agreed a compensation package to move from the site. There are almost 300 companies still to settle with the LDA. The bulldozers are set to move onto the site in July 2007. About 25% of the companies had yet to respond to the compulsory purchase orders.

USEFUL WEBLINKS and RESOURCES

Apparently there will be no repeat of the Wembley fiasco for the Olympics venues - we'll see.

Also available a KEYFILE which I wrote on the topic....

There is a good section in recent CURRICULUM CLIPS broadcast in March 2007 - this is a very useful clip and further materials will shortly be added to the BBC website. Thanks to Dan Ellison for his work on this.

Already there have been some costing issues...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6391075.stm - cost could rise to £9 billion !

Lots of reports in March 2007 about how the costs are continuing to rise, and this may be drawing money away from other causes.

Some new resources, including a useful set of large images is now available from the GEOGRAPHY TEACHING TODAY website.

New resources for April 2007 produced by Laura Davidson of Ashville College - many thanks !

POWERPOINT (to introduce games)
