MAJORCA: The island formerly known as Mallorca
Also try the updated version of this activity with AFL IDEAS.
This is a major piece of work for Autumn half term in Year 8 (or at least it was...)
See my page of MAJORCA links for more assistance. There is some useful information here. A particularly useful site which you could use for the project is MAJORCA UNCOVERED. This is a site which has been put together by people who have visited hotels and then written reviews of them.
It might be interesting to find the details of a hotel in Majorca which is featured in one of the brochures you have, and read the brochure description, then look at the views in the website. It has details on most of the major Majorcan resorts which include the following places (these would probably appear on your map..)
Alcudia, C'an Picafort, Cala Bona, Cala D'Or, Magaluf, Puerto Pollensa, Sa Coma, Santa Ponsa, Palma Nova, Cala Millor, Porto Cristo
An article in the Observer in November 2002 pointed out the sophisticated side of the island:
MAJORCA PROJECT
Start with a brainstorm to assess people's views on the island: have any of them visited it, or know people who have ? Can also compare location with the UK on wallmap.
As an introduction, you will have seen a number of reports from various holiday programmes. The department has a number of programmes featuring excerpts from 'Holiday' and their ilk, featuring various reporters. The programmes covered various areas of the island: Palma, Puerto Pollensa, Deia, craft markets, Cap de Formentor.
TITLE: "MAJORCA: a Holiday paradise ?"
Need to include the following things in the project:
Pupils will be working to collect data and information in either 1's, 2's or 3's. Each pupil needs to hand in a separate project in a plastic wallet file, complete with title page with your name and form on it.
Will be using the textbooks: Investigating Geography, and Interactions.
AIM: To investigate the effects of tourism in the Mediterranean.
Guidance sheet needs to be followed - will be given a yellow A5 sheet - this needs to be followed in detail if a reasonable enquiry is to be produced.
Consider the following points:
HELPFUL TIPS
How will the enquiry be marked ?
There will be 3 headings for marking the enquiry on:
a) Introduction, Aims and setting the scene - 5 marks
b) Presentation of information - 5 marks
c) Analysis and conclusions - is Majorca a paradise ? - 10 marks
TOTAL: 20 marks
Note: AN AFL version of this assessment has now been introduced
Some useful WEBSITES are available on this page. You will have at least one lesson in the computer suite to make use of these websites.
In June 2003,there were some articles in the papers regarding the proposals by the newly elected Government of the Balearic's to scrap the current eco-tax which is levied on tourists. The centre-right Popular Party (PP) has won the election and promised to remove the tax, which is €1 (around 70p) a night. The tax has raised £25 million, most of which has been spent cleaning up the island. The PP is apparently planning some developments which may damage the environment of the island. The islands apparently have a combined population of 800 000 people, and host 11 million visitors each year. The tax meant each visitor paid around £4.30 per week. Many German visitors apparently stopped visiting, although hotels tended to 'pay it back' by issuing guests with vouchers for drinks. UK arrivals were up 8% last year - 4 million visitors in the last 12 months. (The Observer, June 2003)
