MODELLING
What is modelling ?
If you're starting a new piece of work, how do pupils know what they are expected to produce ? You need to take them through the process of how they will produce the work, and let them see some examples of previous year's work. These can be scanned in and saved at the time (you see how you need to plan well in advance and integrate ICT in several respects...)
Information below adapted from TRAINING MATERIALS for FOUNDATION SUBJECTS
3 copies of the folder containing these materials should be in each Secondary school. Further copies can be ordered from PROLOG.
Modelling involves the teacher as 'expert' demonstrating how to do something whilst thinking aloud. This can involve: how to start, selecting appropriate information for the audience (this is the extra step which can be easily introduced to existing pieces of work..), organising the information and coming to an end.
This can be applied to pieces of work, or the learning of new skills.
Some of this is related to the old adage: I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand...
Any learning process needs to be slowed down and demonstrated visually... time then has to be made available to discuss what has been done (related to PLENARIES..)
Students need to be shown precisely HOW the process can be done, perhaps by breaking the process down into manageable steps.
Eventually this has to be done independently: by the students themselves
