"MY PLACES"

Google Earth Project for SAGT Conference Workshop 2006

When launching Google Earth, a folder called MY PLACES is opened. Any places visited can be added to this by adding a placemark. There are also TEMPORARY PLACES as you use the application, or open a file which you have obtained from another source.

These places can then be exported and SHARED with other people.

That is the aim of the project.

The images below will enlarge to full screen size by clicking the thumbnail. Do this if you need further help.

Open Google Earth and navigate to the place you want to visit e.g. Bonar Hall, University of Dundee

Get the place you want to bookmark or put a placemark on visible in the centre of the screen.

Press CTRL and 'N' to insert a blank push pin. These can be edited and amended. You can also use the button at the bottom of the screen, to the right of the navigation area.

Once the pushpin is in place - called NEW PLACEMARK, right click on it, and a properties box will appear as on the image below:

Choose an appropriate NAME for the placemark, and a description. During the session I will explain how this step can be made even more useful, and the details and label can have an image or other material added to it and can be placed in different ways in relation to the ground. A taste of that can be seen by clicking in the ADVANCED box, and browsing through the options. There is a wide selection available by BROWSING to the a PALETTE then clicking on the icon which appears at the right handside of the NAME box and choosing a design.

Here is a selection from the PALETTES

Click on OK to see the place mark in all its glory.

OK - how do you let me have it, and any others you have ?

Well, you create a new folder for your placemarks by making one of course...

Please note that there are slight variations if using Google Earth 4

Right click in the MY PLACES section of the left hand column. Choose NEW, FOLDER and call it MY SAGT PLACES. The folder will appear.

DRAG and DROP your placemark into your folder.

Right click on the folder, choose SAVE AS, and save the folder in a place you can find it !

Send it to my e-mail address which is [a.parkinson@gmail.com] by attaching it to the e-mail

alternatively, you can go to my 4SHARED FOLDER - follow the link below

http://www.4shared.com/dir/866549/2322061d/sharing.html

You will be able to see files that people have placed there, and download them if appropriate...
