USING EXTRACTS FROM LITERATURE, OR MUSIC, TO TEACH THE GCSE PILOT GEOGRAPHY COURSE

EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS

Here are some of the texts used in the teaching of 'Extreme Environments'

MOUNTAINS

Landscape and Memory - Simon Schama - good for the changing attitudes towards landscapes such as mountain ranges and forests...

Mountains of the Mind - Robert McFarlane

Killing Dragons - Fergus Fleming - explores the Alps, which were once thought to be the home of dragons

POLAR REGIONS

Tim Moore: 'Frost on my Moustache'

Philip Pullman: 'Northern Lights' & 'The Amber Spyglass' : descriptions based on Svalbard

This is the home of the Polar Bears and Iorek Byrnison and Bolvangar, lit by the lights of the Aurora, and Lapland with the port of Trollesund. Home to witches and soared over by balloons.

"The Worst Journey in the World" - Apsley Cherry Garrard

DESERTS

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taklamakan - interesting article on the Taklamakan

"Sahara" - Michael Palin (and TV series) - often repeated on UKTV channels for those of you with Sky
