OCR 'PILOT' GCSE GEOGRAPHY RESOURCES
MY PLACE: LIVING IN THE UK TODAY

New page for June 2006 - updated January 2007
Check out the PILOT GCSE BLOG for more (much more)
Our place will be King's Lynn and the surrounding area (NW Norfolk). This will then be extended as the need demands... If you are teaching this unit in a different part of the country, you will need to adapt your particular examples...
Candidates use their own locality and community as a STARTING POINT.
This involves a study of a local area starting from candidates' own local place and community.
For many people, the GOOGLE EARTH application has provided excellent quality imaging (sadly this has yet to reach NW Norfolk) which was updated in the first week of December 2005. This would make exploration, measurement and annotation of the local area easier.
There is also scope for AFFECTIVE MAPPING, CRIME MAPS, ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY INDICES & TOWNSCAPE analysis, plus
CLONE TOWN work.
Need to develop their own personal geographies. Introduce some cultural ideas.
Have to do a piece of FIELDWORK and collect PRIMARY DATA
Processes affecting the CHANGING GEOGRAPHY of our own lives.
LINKS and CONNECTIONS the local community has with its REGION, the NATION and the WIDER WORLD.
Important issues about the UK's changing IDENTITY and CHARACTER
Provides OPPORTUNITIES for:
Exploring candidates' personal geographies
Using local community links and experiences
Undertaking fieldwork in the local area
Arranging visits from and to local people / organisations
Developing candidates' understanding of citizenship
Also remember the conceptual emphases: candidates should have opportunities to do the following:
compare, contrast and explain the similarities and differences between places and explain the consequences of unevenness - consider the UK's countries and regions
candidates should understand links between places and scales
identify and evaluate possible future scenarios for the local place (linked to the idea of sustainability and Agenda 21)
understand and explain how their place is linked to other locations regionally, nationally and globally
See my separate page of KINGS LYNN links. As this unit progresses, the page will be added to...

|
![]() Very useful catchment map - good example of catchments. There are 131 000 potential listeners within this area. This information would be useful to advertisers who would know which customers they could reach. |
| Inspiring Norfolk | A good website
which has a link between Art and Geography. Look at Norfolk in a new way... http://www.inspiringnorfolk.co.uk
|
A new project aims to identify the ICONS of England.
http://www.icons.org.uk/learn-play/teachers-guide - a useful site...
Useful book produced by COMMON GROUND: "England in Particular" - this has some wonderful evocations of place and England..
Some key terms which need to be developed - these are included on the front of the resource booklet.
| Multiple Deprivation | Lacking in many opportunities, which leads to a poor quality of life. This could include lack of employment opportunities. |
| Catchment Area | The area from which the school students come. Can also be measured in other ways... For example: see KLFM above.. |
| Urban regeneration | The redevelopment of an area such as an inner city zone. It may include environmental, socio-cultural and economic improvements. |
| Deindustrialisation | The decline of industry, which may be as a result of globalisation. |
| Brownfield site | A site which has been previously been built on and which is restored for further use. |
Also need to look for links to the FIVE KEY CONCEPTS:
Futures
Uneven development
Globalisation
Interdependence
Sustainability
You can make the acronym FUGIS, which is a helpful way of referring to the concepts and (hopefully) remembering them. E-mail me for a large PPT of the FUGIS idea.
Coming soon are some resources which are in preparation at the moment....
Keep an eye out for THE SIMPSONS GO TO KING'S LYNN (also see new SIMPSONS page)
A great poem to set the pupils thinking is Benjamin Zephaniah's 'THE BRITISH'.
Have included a range of ideas from this. If you object to the poem being here (all I want to do is bring it to a wider audience who will then want to seek out more of Benjamin's work...) let me know and I'll remove it...
Some interesting ideas on PLACE in the new ECLIPSE resource: available from publisher's website.
IDEAS FOR DEVELOPMENT
Head to any 'tacky' tourist shop in most large cities and you'll find lots of UK based souvenirs - I visited a cheap shop in York
Also check out the LOCAL STUDIES area of your local library. My local library has some useful videos showing the history of the town which would make good resources for the start of the course. I will probably take them out for the first 2 or 3 weeks of term.
Also bought some cheap resources in the sale at my local Ottakars:
Also going to make use of a MAKE YOUR OWN OPOLY kit, and develop a MONOPOLY BOARD for the local area.
Possible activities (these will develop over the next few months....)

THE SIMPSONS VISIT KING'S LYNN
PLANNING ENQUIRY
BIG ISSUES IN THE UK
A NICE CUP OF TEA
This is an idea related to work done by Stuart Hall (and no I'm not going to mention "It's a....)
He produced a nice analysis of this very 'English' tradition, which is not actually English...
"because they don't grow it in Lancashire, you know. Not a single tea plantation exists within the United Kingdom... Where does it come from ? Ceylon-Sri Lanka, India. That is the outside history that is inside the history of the English....."
More on this when we get to this topic...
