PILOT GCSE RESOURCES
We were accepted onto the 3rd tranche of the pilot, for starting in September 2006.
Resources will be produced over the coming year.
We shall be developing resources for this course, and these will appear on these pages as they become available. We received a nice blue box containing a number of documents. These included a copy of PILOT NEWS, a copy of the SPECIFICATION and some past papers.
PAST PAPER DETAILS - some notes on the available past papers...
NOTRE DAME HIGH SCHOOL, Norwich - Notre Net - do a search for GG / IT for resources that have been produced by Jane Watkins and the team at Notre Dame High School in Norwich - excellent collaborative effort, and thanks for sharing it with everyone !
Thanks also to Guy Mortimer and colleagues at Thorpe St. Andrew school for sending me a range of resources.
I have created a POWERPOINT which has just 5 slides: these cover the main ideas of FUGIS. These slides will be
| MY PLACE: living in the UK today | AN EXTREME ENVIRONMENT | PEOPLE AS CONSUMERS |
| Google Earth has recently improved the quality of images for most of the UK. This would allow many schools to get to grips with the local area. Remember also the facility to overlay aerial images on many of the online mapping tools. | Do a search on FLICKR for images of Svalbard. Use them to create a PHOTO STORY starter by adding some suitable music. |
Jane Girlow is running a Teacher to Teacher session on the 'People as Consumers' unit at the GA Conference 2006 - I'll be there... |
| This will require students to be given the tools to consider their own personal geographies. They will need to work towards producing a series of resources which express their local geographies. | Now available the rather wonderful RGS-IBG
site on Antarctica, complete with
Download the teachers' notes which explain the links with the Pilot GCSE specification. You can also get them by clicking the link to TEACHERS NOTES here. |
Keep a clippings
file in the few weeks either side of Christmas, for lots of stories on
over-consumption, and the effects on our credit card, health and wasteline.
I have some from Christmas 2005, but we will be doing this session leading
up to Christmas 2006. The BBC NEWS has a BUSINESS section which often carries stories of consumer issues. These would form a useful resource. |
| Consider shops in
soap operas and how they fit into the scheme of things... Where would the Kabin in Coronation Street fit, or the Minit Mart (sic) in 'Eastenders'. |
||
| Try keeping a
DIARY OF A CONSUMER and try to keep track of all you consume. It's
important to do this yourself first - perhaps produce a photo diary (the
photos don't have to be of your own house - use FLICKR) to give some
examples of everyday photos on most topics that you can think of. Here's the result when I did this one lazy SUNDAY - compare your efforts with this. |
The Word documents below came out of an INSET course for the schools which had joined the Pilot which was held at the Lakeside Centre in Birmingham (nice venue by the way...) in March 2006.
They came as a result of an activity which asked the delegates to consider what sorts of ASSESSMENT TASKS or COURSEWORK they could think of to set candidates - they could be as creative as possible. Some of these were pushing the boundaries (especially the one I came up with for consumer issues involving eBay...) The contributions below were produced by the teachers present at the meeting. Thanks to them all for their creativity.
Please feel free to download the lists, and if you could then send the finished items or the development of the idea to fruition that would be great - we can then save each other lots of time, and have some great ideas ready made for September.
