Responses to question 6:
PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED WHILE USING THE INTERNET?
E-mail virus crashed the entire system for 2 weeks
Problem with BT and Server had to be rebuilt by techician
Too slow: computers crashing
Pages too slow to download
Hit by NIMBA virus
Too slow to use, as used it at a busy time
Abandoned lessons many times: often the server at the school's fault
Network crash meant half a term's ICT time lost
Our school's NOF training has come to a halt
Internet down: software crash
Printer failure
Printers failing
Printers out of ink: poor quality of print: expensive running costs of colour lasers
ICT technician is only part time and in great demand
Server down
Worm/virus shut down the system
Pressure on bookings of computer room
Internet went down locally
Server has failed in the past
Problems with NTL lines
Slow access is the biggest problem
Access to internet and speed of machines can be a problem
Had to modify the lesson as the site wanted was inaccessible
Poor connection speed
Always have a standby lesson ready
Hardware has crashed - mainly when using older laptops
Problems with provider
Time it takes
Availability of room
Lots of irrelevant material
Most sites have too much reading for students with SLD
Major problems with the ICT Network (RM provider)
I have abandoned a lesson
Me too...
ICT Technician is not 'user friendly'
The problems we have are often linked with network failure, pupils not having passwords, and the network running slowly
Although I have never abandoned a lesson it is important to be flexible. Particular sites can be down for whatever reason at a particular time. Planning is more complex and time consuming than usual, and you can't expect to 'teach from the front'. This means handouts are necessary, yet the lesson must allow for individuality.
Some students are very experienced and others have made a career out of avoiding ICT skills.
Whole system collapse
NOF training a 'vast waste of time'
Network down
Network problems
Slow hardware
Lessons have had to be abandoned on several occasions due to hardware problems and server problems.
Accessed a site at home, but pupils were denied access due to filtering
Quite often allow pairs of pupils access while the rest of the group is doing a whole-class activity
