SAND DUNE TRANSECT

Thanks to an anonymous student for the following transect data. This time the angle between the 2 points is also included. Remember that a negative value is a downslope and a positive value is an upslope. The distance is the actual distance along that angle, rather than between the 2 poles themselves to simplify the reconstruction of the transect. I recommend that the kites for the sand dune plants be drawn directly beneath a copy of the transect so one can see where the plants lie in relation to the position in the dune system.

For both transects, the readings started in the pine woods of Holkham Meals, dictated by the weather which we had at the start of the afternoon. They progress up and over the grey dune and across several yellow dunes. The transect was carried out at an angle of 50 degrees relative to North.

Between points: Distance (m) Angle (in degrees)
1 - 2 4.4 15
2 - 3 2.5 13
3 - 4 2.7 -4
4 - 5 4.34 -25
5 - 6 1.8 -37
6 - 7 5.3 0
7 - 8 5.2 8
8 - 9 4.3 -7
9 - 10 2.8 7
10 - 11 3 15
11 - 12 6.6 5
12 - 13 3.15 4
13 - 14 9.65 6
14 - 15 0.5 45
15 - 16 70.5 -10

Distances measured using 20m tapes. Angles measured using gun clinometers.

Between points 6 & 7 was a dune slack.

The very steep angle was where the high tide had cut into the front of the first semi-fixed dune, and left a small bluff.

The embryo dunes were several hundred metres out to sea, across a beach patterned by fulls and swales.

Also for this transect are the following soil pH values:

Embryo Dune: pH 6.5

Yellow Dune: pH 7

Grey Dune: pH 8

VEGETATION DETAILS

At each point, a quadrat survey was carried out. Plant identification was a little more difficult on the dunes. Letters refer to the ACFOR SCALE, as used on the salt marsh transect.
