LESSON PLAN IDEAS for RETAILING / SHOP 'TIL YOU DROP

Last updated July 2008 - this page now ARCHIVED

1. RETAIL PARKS

Put together a POWERPOINT presentation which includes some of the features of the program: photograph labelling and annotation, linking maps and photos, animation and slide transitions. Need to focus on the reasons for location and the benefits for people who choose to shop there. Could also consider the impact on local towns and their CBDs. As always, the focus should be on CONTENT of the slides, rather than

Each slide should be on one aspect of the SHOPPING CENTRE:

LOCATION

MAP with ANNOTATIONS

STATISTICS

for example, the Trafford Centre has 1.4 million square feet of retail space, with over 250 shops. There are thousands of free car parking spaces, and restaurants and cinemas.

ADVANTAGES OF ITS LOCATION

Check out my MEADOWHALL page for more on this theme

2. Another recent (ish) development has been clearance outlets and 'VILLAGES' which feature fashionable clothing items but at reduced prices. Some good ones are:

McARTHUR GLEN (on A64 outside York)

LAKE SIDE VILLAGE (formerly Yorkshire Outlet on edge of Doncaster)

CLARKS VILLAGE (at Street near Glastonbury...)

- this has a useful site which gives information specifically for students who might be studying the area for their GCSE projects...

also a new trend for FARMERS' MARKETS

Also a recent KEYFILE article on Meadowhall and changes in Retailing as written by me, is available at GEOPROJECTS.

3. Need some amusing SHOP related pictures for a powerpoint ? A book came out in April 2005 which features punning shop titles. The site is at SHOP HORROR. One of the best ones is a Sheffield Fish and Chip shop I used to pass called the BATTERSEA COD's HOME, also SAM & ELLA's SANDWICH BAR. Reminds me of the shop in the film 'Roxanne' called 'All Things Dead'... Look out for the Shop Horror book in all good book shops soon. Also came across the take-away called Balti Towers while driving from my hotel to the GA Conference 2005 in Derby.

Get your students thinking of some names...

4. TESCO LINKS

I suppose Tesco should really have a page to themselves. After all, they're the biggest retailer in the UK, and in 2005 announced profits of over £2 billion. About £1 in every £8 (or is it getting closer to £7 now) is spent in a Tesco store. There are 4 in King's Lynn alone !

They also opened a store in Hunstanton, which has a population of just over 6 000, but considerably more during the summer months. The queue for the cafe is out of the door in the mornings, and presumably this is when they make their profit.

Anyone from Tesco reading this ? Fancy sponsoring GeographyPages ?  I could produce some educational resources for you !

In June 2005, the BBC's MONEY PROGRAMME showed a special programme all about the growing influence of TESCO: predictably I went out and missed it... There are details about the programme on the MONEY PROGRAMME website of the BBC.

Another site I came across recently (well, November 2005) is TESCOPOLY or Tesco + Monopoly. It is a site which looks at the effect of TESCO on local communities and small businesses. They say that Tesco controls 30% of the UK grocery market. It has the tagline "Every little hurts"... Useful for looking at the changes in retailing in areas.

Now a new book by Andrew Simms out too...

Has links to the ETHICAL CONSUMER website.

Oh well, just blew my chance of sponsorship...

And here is the new TESCO page.

5. Can also consider CLONE TOWNS: and do a FIELD TRIP or  a VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP - using GOAD PLANS

6. CHAPELFIELD SHOPPING CENTRE

Explore the postings on this forum reply. There are over 40 replies to the original question, which was asking for information. This would be a useful place to explore issues to do with shopping centres.

Last year, I read 'Shopped' by Joanna Blythman. Some very useful content. Lots on the impact of supermarkets on various aspects of society, including the effect on transport and the environment. She is also working on other books on the impact of what we feed our children.
