The Sheffield Flood of 1864  is an event which many people, even those living in the area, do not have any knowledge of. The flood was the result of a dam burst at the head of the Loxley valley. Water swept down the valley, and through into Sheffield from the Dale Dyke Dam. There is an excellent book on the subject produced by Peter Machan, with illustrations by Eric Leslie.

There is also the definitive website on the flood, which can be viewed at http://www.mick-armitage.staff.shef.ac.uk/sheffield/flood.html produced by Mick Armitage. Well worth a visit.

The following poems are by Rob Hindle, and are from a larger collection which was written during 2005. They offer snapshots of the effects of the flood on people and places. They are all WORD documents of small size.

Alathea Hague - a domestic servant employed by the Chapman family of Little Matlock

Emma Wallace - widow and mother of two from Kelham Island

Found Things - objects found in the aftermath of the flood

At Rotherham - a body and a policeman...
