TOURISM LESSON PLANS

Updated June 2008

HERE is the Scheme of Work which has been updated since.  Thanks to Mr. Nunnerley for his work on this Scheme of Work.

1. Tourism in West Norfolk - leaflet production / could be adapted to other areas

For information on walks in Norfolk, go HERE. Or download Walk no. 134 from WALKINGWORLD.COM which I produced when the site first launched...

2. Majorca Project: Instructions on Year 8 Project, now with a newly updated MAJORCA ASSESSMENT page (see no. 11) - this has now been dropped from the scheme

3. The 50 places to see before you die.

This is a part of a recent BBC programme which asked viewers to say where they would like to visit before they died. There are 50 places on the list. There is also a list of top buildings, natural features and other types of attractions. There is a TOP 10 of UK locations (none of which appear in the Top 50). New Zealand, not surprisingly features highly, particularly the South Island. This is currently being used once again in advertising to tie in with the release of 'The Two Towers'.

The UK Top Ten is:

  1. Windermere

  2. London

  3. Isles of Scilly

  4. Channel Islands

  5. Edinburgh

  6. Giant's Causeway

  7. Isle of Skye

  8. Glasgow

  9. Cornwall

  10. Manchester

4. Why do people go on holiday ?

5. There is an excellent FOCUS ON TOURISM lesson plan at the Geography section of TCTRUST site by Paul Hunt. Go to the lesson plans site, and look for the tourism section. There is an excellent worksheet which is for use by Year 8 pupils: Focus on Tourism. Need to check this for changes in links.

The excellent Global Eye site has a link to an example I use as an ironic aspect of the tourism industry: the alleged despoilation of the beach at Phi Phi Leh Island during the filming of 'The Beach'. The film is about an idyllic beach which, in filming on an idyllic beach meant that the real beach was changed by the film-makers with trees being moved etc...

6. Go HERE to play the TOURISM GAME. It's produced by Stephen Fairbrass. It's a role playing game for between 12 and 50 people. It has all the necessary resources that you will need.

7. WORLD66

Go to the WORLD66 site and register for some space. You then have a new home page. One of the first things that you can do is produce a map for your personal travels with the countries that you have visited.

8. RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL

The tagline is "Give the World a Break"....

How could the effect of a holiday on the place that tourists are visiting be reduced ?

Think about the average TOURIST HONEYPOT. There are 3 types of honeypot in general: 3 types of attraction which mean that the place has developed as one:

HISTORICAL / CULTURAL

PHYSICAL (based around a particular landscape feature, or to do with the surrounding area which the honeypot is perhaps the key access point to...)

LEISURE BASED

9. WRITING A TOURIST GUIDE TO THE UK

Dorling Kindersley recently published a tourist guide to the UK, and there is also a ROUGH GUIDE. There are now a large number of publishers and guides to almost any destination. There's even a guide to Antarctica. There's more detail and a useful exercise HERE.

10. A PARODY GUIDE

Recent purchases were the excellent 'Molvania: a land untouched by modern dentistry' and the follow up 'Phaic Tan', and 'San Sombrero' was added in 2008. These are JetLag travel guides, a parody of the Lonely Planet etc. genre. It has some very funny sections which cover all aspects of the country. The website, which can be linked to from HERE has some excellent stuff which may give you the inspiration to produce a similar resource for your local area. Why not put together a webpage or two, or a tourist leaflet to be left in your local TIC publicising the parodic joys of your own area - look for stereotypes and ways of bending things to make them funny... Think of local customs and how they might come across to a person from overseas. Produce them with BIGHUGELABS front covers and see if anyone picks them up... Guerrilla Geography....

11. ROLLER COASTERS

If you have a BROADBAND site why not try out a TRIAL roller coaster and then do some designing. Could be a site to give the G&T something to aim for when completing their work.

12. ECOTOURISM CASE STUDY

Related to an article in the 'Daily Mail' by David Atkinson

MADIDI NATIONAL PARK, BOLIVIA

This is one of 22 national parks in Bolivia, making up 16% of the country. Madidi national park has an area of 4.75 million acres

Madidi national park has 11% of world's species of flora and fauna, including 10 000 tree species

Community run eco-lodge: Albergue Ecologico Chalalan. Attracts 1000 people locally - funding goes to health and education services

Project started in 1995, with £800 000 funding from Inter American Development Bank and Conservation International.

There are jobs for locals as guides: local tour operators charge £10 for a jungle experience - local Quechua-Tacana community - supports 74 families. Chalalan is a little more expensive than other lodges - series of cabins - local stone built bathrooms, solar energy shower, mosquito nets. Communal meals made with local ingredients, Bolivian red wine from Tarija region.

Series of marked trails of different levels of difficulty. Chance to see jungle ecosystem. Area has been affected by illegal logging, but the area is recovering. Money was raised following the discovery of a new species of monkey - the name of the monkey was auctioned off via a website charityfolks.com and this raised around £350 000.

The same article suggested 2 useful weblinks for visiting to develop ECOTOURISM case studies...

KAPAWI ECOLODGE in Ecuador on the Pastaza river

14. Year 8 Assessed Piece of work on Cambridge

A nice piece of work kindly sent to me by Katharine Hutchinson from Chesterton College (Word Document)

Features an AfL style mark sheet - could obviously be adapted to other locations...

15. SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

We do a piece of work on the design of a sustainable resort in Jamaica. My mother in law went there you know, and I didn't have to force her to go...

How can a usual holiday be made more 'green'... Has an introductory powerpoint which I'll put on Slideshare.

Activity

Instead of getting there by plane....

Instead of staying in a large hotel....

Instead of buying souvenirs made from coral or local materials....

Instead of staying in an American chain hotel....

Instead of eating imported food and drinking imported drinks....

When going on an excursion....

Suggest some alternatives...

16. BUTLER MODEL

We use a simplified version of the model on how resorts develop.

Available on my slideshare page (user name GeoBlogs)

This is followed by a role play which asks Where the Parrys go on holiday...

Turned into an assessment.

17. SURFER ISLAND DME

Surfing is a growth sport.

Map of an island with 5 locations.

Also check out the GTT website for more relevant ideas in this area.
