YEAR 12 TO 13 TRANSITION TASK

Newly updated for 2007-8

Thanks to Dr. Stuart Hitch, colleague on the GA's SPC,  for the inspiration for switching to this task.

Feel free to adapt further in your own school / situation and adapt the issues that suit your specification. This avoids the usual problems of missing students due to University open days, student conferences and work experience as they work on a series of tasks which develop their confidence in using a range of resources.

The idea is that students think about the key enquiry questions - need to have access to ICT / library resources as well as a range of presentation techniques. It's also worth assembling a folder of current and past newspaper resources as well as other online sources. A list of useful websites will be added to this page by the time the section starts.

SUMMER PREPARATION TASKS

For both groups, from Mr. Parkinson

  1. Over the summer, you will be expected to start a CLIPPINGS FILE of newspaper and magazine articles. This needs to be related to the major themes of Yr 13: Cold Environments, Ecosystems, Atmosphere, Economic Systems and Globalisation, Rural-Urban relationships and changes in both, plus the various Synoptic themes. This should add to your existing resources.

  1. Also check the old favourite: http://www.geographypages.co.uk over the summer for new content ready for the new year.

  1. Oganise your Year 12 notes, you WILL need the Synoptic sections from these in Year 13, as well as some of the case studies that we covered this year.

4. The new NING !

I have set up an area called a NING on the internet – this is ‘state of the art’…

This is called KESGEOGRAPHERS, and is available at the following address:

http://kesgeographers.ning.com/ - send me an e-mail to geoblogs@europe.com and I will send an invitation which allow you to log in and to add content, photos, comments etc. with the aim that we produce a study support resource that will build collaboratively

5. The Royal Geographical Society’s GEOGRAPHY IN THE NEWS site contains a range of resources written by Simon Oakes, the chief Human Geography examiner for Edexcel ‘A’ – ask us for the User name and password for free access

6. If you go to New Scientist website, you can also access the last 15 years of articles – again, ask a teacher for the user name and password

7. Check out the NEW INTERNATIONALIST magazine: http://www.newint.org – another magazine which has a lot of geographical content, as well as the regular sweep of the broadsheet newspaper websites:

http://www.independent.co.uk

http://www.timesonline.co.uk

http://www.guardian.co.uk/

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/

8 You’ll be given a sticker – wherever you go this summer, stick the sticker (and a stamp!) on a postcard and send it to us. Each one we receive will go into a prize draw.

9. Have a nice holiday !
