VALUING PLACES

Valuing Places is a project of the GEOGRAPHICAL ASSOCIATION.

The aim is to explore GLOBAL INTERCONNECTEDNESS....

Pupils are encouraged to discover and explore their own personal geographies.

There are some great ideas here.. I bought a copy through AMAZON. Why not check out the BOOKSHOP on GeographyPages.

Visit the companion website WORLD OF EXPERIENCE and you can create your own map by opening up a blank map and entering your own maps. This can also be ordered as an actual map...

As the site says:

"Life is a journey.....don't travel without a map!

There is no place in this world that has not been placed on a map. Mountains, forests, rivers, seas...All frontiers have been conquered. Earth seems to have disclosed all of her secrets. Is there nothing left to discover? Has every path been travelled?

Fortunately not! Look through the glasses of your imagination and journey to another realm of human existence: the world of human experience.

A refreshing new perspective towards every day life. Who could deny themselves or others such a revelation?"

Also has a themed area called the LANDSCAPE OF LOVE. ("An Atlas of the Heart")

This will get you going on the route of the ideas in the ATLAS of Experience.

Valuing Places INSET meetings are being held in 2005-6 at a number of locations. I shall hopefully be at a meeting in Cambridge in November 2005.

VP is a CPD led curriculum development project, which:

Increases public understanding of our global mutual dependence and the need for international development

Calls for every child to be educated about development issues

"It is about the geography of right here and right now. It is about the simultaneity of difference"

Doreen Massey (2004)

David Lambert talks about geographers having a 'zoom lens' to explore the different scales of issues which impact on our daily lives.

Try the GA's WEBSITE section on VP for more.

Valuing Places East Anglia Workshop November 2005

My colleague Miss Davidson recently attended the session above, and returned with a very useful folder and CD of resources.

Some of the ideas that we particularly liked included:

FOOD MILES - producing a ruler to use with a world map to measure distances and work out the most 'mileage' - links to video in World 2000 series

FAVELA: Estate agents' descriptions

FOOTBALL: global teams and merchandising of brands such as Manchester United

AFFECTIVE MAPPING

Lots of ideas on Brazil.
