WEATHER LINKS FOR YEAR 8 LESSONS

on WEATHER AND ICT

For forecasts for places in the UK, try the following as a starting point - there are MANY more:

WUNDERGROUND: UK PAGE

THE MET OFFICE

THE ITV WEATHER SITE

THE BBC WEATHER SITE - has pollen count, tide tables etc.

INTELLICAST (this has such features as a GOLF forecast, and a HEALTH forecast which includes things like pollen counts)

Remember that you need to work out what the weather is going to be like for today and tomorrow, and think about what aspects of the weather are going to be important for your target audience.

Worth visiting the A2 Meteorology page too, as this has many more links which offer weather data.

There are lots of other weather stations available in other parts of the world. You can of course find lots of information at the relevant page of GEOGRAPHYPAGES.

ICT SCHEME OF WORK

This can be downloaded and students work through the activities. From this page, you can download some materials in WORD format or in PDF format.

4. WEATHER LESSON 2 (Weather around the World)

Weather sites are very common.

FORECASTS have to be produced for a particular purpose.

Students have to use one of the weather sites above to look at the 1 day and 3-5 day forecast. They have to look at the accuracy of the forecasts.

The students then have to consider a range of activities which are weather dependent. These can be related to teachers that they know so that they can be made topical and relevant.

For example:

Mr.... is planning a barbeque at his house on Friday night. Should he get his sausages out, or plan something else instead ?

Mrs.... is hoping to play golf on ..... night. If there is a risk of thunderstorms this will not be possible.

Students then have to produce a piece of advice and produce a slip which gives the advice, or they can formulate a text message using a phone blank which I use. These can be passed to the member of staff...

Other areas that could be used as examples:

FARMERS

People making a long journey

Builders - putting up scaffolding

Glider pilots / Windsurfers etc....

Can also link the forecasting to a specific weather event e.g. floods.
